CHRGJ Alum Roxanne Moore Writes “Injustice, Reform and Hope for Abused Women in Chinese Courts”

Following the announcement that China’s Supreme People’s Court has overturned the death sentence of Li Yan, a woman convicted of killing her husband after suffering months of abuse, Roxanne Moore looks at domestic violence in China within the context of the country’s courts and legal system.

Li Yan’s case

Li Yan was brutally abused by her husband. He beat her, burned her body and face with cigarettes, cut off part of her finger, locked her out on the balcony in the freezing winter in little clothing, and on one occasion dragged her down three flights of stairs by her hair.
