August 20, 2014

The UN Secretary-General has appointed CHRGJ Co-chair and Faculty Director Professor Philip Alston to serve on the Central African Republic Commission of Inquiry to Investigate Events Since January 1, 2013.The UN Security Council authorized the Commission in December 2013 to investigate reports of human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws. Professor Alston was recently named to the Commission following the resignation of Jorge Castañeda (Mexico). Alston joins two other international law experts on the Commission, Bernard Acho Muna (Cameroon) and Fatimata M’Baye (Mauritania).

In his role on the Commission, Professor Alston will engage in fact-finding “to compile information, to help identify the perpetrators of such violations and abuses, point to their possible criminal responsibility and to help ensure that those responsible are held accountable.” CHRGJ congratulates Professor Alston on his appointment to the Commission, which it believes is a unique opportunity to help clarify the allegations of human rights abuses in the Central African Republic and promote justice for victims.
