CHRGJ Welcomes Pablo de Greiff, UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non-recurrence, as Senior Fellow
September 19, 2014

The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ) is delighted to announce that Pablo de Greiff, UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, will be joining the Center this fall as a Senior Fellow. De Greiff’s appointment further strengthens CHRGJ’s robust transitional justice program and adds a very important dimension to its diverse range of expertise in international law and human rights.

De Greiff became the UN Human Rights Council’s first Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-recurrence in 2012. He has already presented several highly-praised and influential thematic reports to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly, dealing with: the importance of a comprehensive approach to transitional justice; current challenges for truth commissions; and prosecutorial strategies for transitional regimes seeking accountability. In addition, he has visited, and prepared detailed country assessments on, Tunisia, Spain, and Uruguay.

From 2001 to 2014 he was Director of Research at the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ). He was previously a tenured faculty member at the State University of New York at Buffalo and spent a year at the Center for Human Values, at Princeton University.  He has lectured extensively, including at Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, the European University Institute, and universities across Europe and Latin America. De Greiff is the editor or co-editor of ten books, and has published widely on transitions to democracy, democratic theory, and the relationship between morality, politics, and law.

De Greiff’s appointment at CHRGJ represents a great opportunity for both the Center and the NYU community. CHRGJ will support De Greiff’s research and scholarship and will facilitate student engagement on emerging transitional justice topics. Pablo de Greiff joins Professor Philip Alston as the second current UN Special Rapporteur based at CHRGJ, further enhancing CHRGJ’s position as a leading program at the intersection of international human rights practice and scholarship.  In welcoming de Greiff, Alston commented that “Pablo de Greiff is an outstanding scholar who has contributed enormously to developing the intellectual underpinnings of this burgeoning field of international activity.  I know of no other practitioner in this area who has written so thoughtfully and influenced the shape of the field as much as Pablo.”

Please join us in welcoming Pablo de Greiff to the NYU community.
