In December 2015 the OHCHR Human Rights Council created the United Nations Independent Investigation on Burundi (UNIIB). The UNIIB, made up of experts Pablo de Greiff, Special Rapporteur on Truth, Justice, Reparations and Guarantees of Non-recurrence, Christof Heyns, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, and Maya Sahli-Fadel, African Union Special Rapporteur on Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons. The UNIIB team visited Burundi from March 1-8, 2016, holding meetings, interviews and exchanges with a wide variety of actors including political leaders, civil society and victims of human rights violations. Pablo de Greiff stated that “this visit was a first step in our effort to gather information and views from all relevant actors. Nothing is better than coming here, to see by ourselves and meet with various actors.” In March 21, 2016 one of the three experts will update the Human Rights Council, and in June and July 2016 the UNIIB will return to Burundi. In the coming weeks, a team of monitors will deploy to Burundi and in September 2016, the experts will issue their final report to the Human Rights Council.
