Christina Holder (LLM ’16) and Jacob Hutt (J.D. ’17) win CHRGJ’s 2016 Global Justice Emerging Scholar Essay Prize

The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ) is proud to name Christina Holder (LLM ’16) and  Jacob Hutt (J.D. ’17) the winners of its 2016 Global Justice Emerging Scholar Essay Prize. Holder and Hutt receive this award for their outstanding research and scholarship on the papers they submitted to the Center’s International Law and Human Rights Emerging Scholarship Conference, held in April 2016. The papers, “On Detail: A Critical Examination of Presenting Sexual Violence” (Hutt) and “From Accountability to Justice: Elevating Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in UN Fact-Finding” (Holder) both present original ideas that addresses  gaps in current legal scholarship. CHRGJ commends the scholars on their thoughtful and creative scholarship.

CHRGJ would like to congratulate all of this year’s student scholars, whose excellent papers generated a dynamic and constructive discussion at the April Conference. CHRGJ looks forward to the 2017 Emerging Human Rights Scholarship Conference, and encourages all NYU law students to submit their work for consideration.

The International Law and Human Rights Emerging Scholarship Conference is co-hosted by CHRGJ and the Institute for International Law and Justice (IILJ). Now in its thriteenth year, the conference provides a unique opportunity for NYU School of Law JD, LLM, and JSD students to receive substantive feedback on their human rights scholarship from NYU law faculty and other experts in the field.

In 2013, CHRGJ began awarding one student from the conference its Global Justice Emerging Scholar Essay Prize for the best paper on human rights. Last year’s winning paper by CHRGJ Scholar Oliver Persey was published in a peer-reviewed journal following the conference. CHRGJ offers guidance to all student scholars seeking to publish their conference papers, and hosts the Transitional Justice and Human Rights Writers Workshop throughout the academic year for students seeking feedback on draft papers related to transitional justice, human rights, and other international law topics.
