Philip Alston to Present Report on Universal Basic Income at Human Rights Council

CHRGJ Faculty Director & Co-Chair and UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Philip Alston will present to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Wednesday, June 7. His presentation, which is planned between 11:00am and 12:00pm on June 7, can be watched live here.

The Special Rapporteur will present a thematic report on universal basic income and human rights to the Council. The report argues that the fundamental values of the international human rights system are under attack in new and diverse ways in 2017, that there is a rapidly growing sense of economic insecurity affecting large segments of society and that the human rights community has had all too little to offer in response.

On Thursday, June 8, from 10:30am to 12:00pm EST, the Special Rapporteur will host a side event at the Human Rights Council on basic income and human rights. Speakers include prominent proponents of basic income, including Professor Philippe van Parijs and Professor Guy Standing. The side-event will be live streamed and can be watched here.

On Friday, June 8 from 10:00-10:30am EST Professor Alston will participate in a Facebook live talk discussing his work as a Special Rapporteur. Join in the conversation on the OHCHR Facebook page.
