Institute for International Law and Justice

The Institute for International Law and Justice (IILJ) brings together the research, scholarship, teaching, and outreach activities of New York University School of Law’s acclaimed international law program. The Institute is closely connected with leading scholars and research institutions worldwide. It integrates the Law School’s scholarly excellence in international law into the policy activities of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, law firms, and industry.

The Institute organizes collective research projects with academic and policy institutions internationally, and academic and practical training initiatives conducted by faculty examining international law questions. Student research papers are integral parts of many of these projects; students also plan and co-organize conferences and workshops with faculty. Current research includes a longstanding project on Global Administrative Law and a new project on megaregional agreements (MegaReg). Past projects addressed indicators as a technology of global governance, climate finance, and inter-institutional relations.

Robert L. Bernstein Institute for Human Rights

Honoring and extending the legacy of Robert L. Bernstein, the Bernstein Institute for Human Rights at NYU School of Law promotes cutting-edge research, education, and advocacy on human rights issues around the world, with a focus on defending dissent and advancing legal empowerment. Created by Faculty Director Professor Margaret Satterthwaite, also Faculty Co-Chair and Director of CHRGJ, the Institute embraces a holistic approach to human rights, deepening engagement with key stakeholders in the pursuit of justice: law students, human rights defenders, scholars, judges, interdisciplinary allies, and affected communities.

Human rights has long been a core focus of the Law School, and with this major initiative NYU Law is further demonstrating its dedication to training the next generation of human rights leaders. The Institute also supports other human rights initiatives at the Law School and University and acts as the coordinating hub for existing human rights work at NYU, including our Center for Human Rights & Global Justice, the US-Asia Law Institute, and NYU Stern’s Center for Business and Human Rights.
