In March 2012, the video “KONY2012” was released by Invisible Children, a San Diego-based NGO. Its stated goal was to raise awareness about the victimization of Ugandan children by The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) thus generating global pressure on the United States to assist the Ugandan government in arresting its leader Joseph Kony and eliminating the LRA. The video was wildly successful in galvanizing global outrage, but it was too good to be true: Kony’s LRA has not operated inside Uganda since 2006. Over time, disturbing questions arose about the campaign: the relationship between Invisible Children and the Ugandan and/or U.S. governments, the manipulation of social media, and whether the U.S. government promoted KONY2012 to pave the way for military action in Central Africa as China also seeks mineral/mining concessions in the region. Examine these questions as well as underlying issues in contemporary media coverage of Africa.
