Eligibility for each of the programs is as follows:
The International Law and Human Rights Fellowship Program is coordinated by the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice (CHRGJ) in cooperation with the Institute for International Law and Justice (IILJ) with the support of the Public Interest Law Center (PILC). Individuals who are current full-time 1L, 2L, LLM and JSD students at NYU in New York and Singapore are eligible to apply. For more information, see https://chrgj.org/opportunities/fellowships.html. The Fellowship has two major components: a 10-12 week internship in summer 2014 at one of many international organizations and a post-internship academic research paper. The list of ILHR program internship organizations is expected to include international tribunals (e.g. ICTY, ECCC); UN organizations (e.g., ILC, UNHCR, OHCHR, UN Women); international and national NGOs (e.g., groups in locations as diverse as Bogotá, Dhaka, Johannesburg, London, Moscow, New Delhi, Taipei, Tel Aviv and Windhoek). Selection of ILHR Fellows: Selection of ILHR is competitive, through an application and interview process, expected to conclude in early December. The ILHR Fellowship application will be available on October 18 on the CHRGJ and IILJ websites (www.chrgj.org and www.iilj.org). Applications will be due Wednesday, November 13.
Constitutional Transitions Internships for 1Ls, 2Ls and LLM students in New York
First year and second year JD and LLM students in New York are eligible to apply for summer internship positions with the constitution building program at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). The summer interns are part of a larger partnership between the Center for Constitutional Transitions and International IDEA (details posted here: http://constitutionaltransitions.org/international-idea-partnership/). One essential aspect of IDEA’s work is to carry out legal research in relation to the constitutional transitions that are taking place throughout the region in the midst of the Arab Spring. Interns will carry out substantive legal research, draft memoranda and other documents, liaise with counterparts in the region and participate in the organization of workshops, conferences, dialogue sessions, etc. The interns’ location will be determined closer to the fellowship’s start date. The internship application will be available on October 18 on the Constitutional Transitions website (http://constitutionaltransitions.org/). Applications will be due on November 13.
The Hague Conference on Private International Law Internship for JD Students
This internship is coordinated by Professor Linda Silberman. Students who are 1Ls and 2Ls who qualify for PILC summer funding are eligible to apply. Selection for an internship at The Hague Conference on Private International Law will be subject to its own application and process. Applications are expected to be available in January 2014.
Guarini Center for Environmental and Land Use Law Fellowship Program
The Guarini Center for Environmental and Land Use Law selects up to ten first-year and second-year students for the Fellowship Program. It is designed to encourage and support students interested in public interest environmental law, international or domestic, through summer internships, mentoring by the School’s environmental and land use faculty, and exposure to leading practitioners in the field. The Program provides grants for summer internships to students working in environmental and land use law with environmental groups, government agencies, and other public interest law practice institutions in the United States or abroad. Recipients will be required to attend a specialized workshop by faculty before their summer internship and attend a series of workshops in the fall term after the internship. Applications will be due February 1. Selections will be made by a faculty committee consisting of Professors Vicki Been, Richard Stewart, and Katrina Wyman. For more information, see http://www.law.nyu.edu/centers/elc/fellowships-internships.
Ford Foundation Law School Public Interest Fellowship
NYU Law is excited to participate in the Ford Foundation Law School Public Interest Fellowship program, which will provide students with the opportunity to work with Ford Foundation grantee organizations in the U.S. and abroad during summer 2014. Fellowships are open to first- and second-year law students and will provide each Fellow with a $9,750 stipend for a 10-week summer internship in the field of public interest. This year, a total of 20 summer fellowships will be awarded to NYU students. Working closely with lawyers and advocates, students will be exposed to a variety of diverse practice settings and gain insight into such topics as reproductive rights; civil rights; gay, lesbian, and transgender rights; immigrants’ rights; prisoners’ and ex-offenders’ rights, voting rights; children’s rights; and other issues of social justice and equity. The fellowship program is a part of the Ford Foundation’s Social Justice Fellowships Initiative. This program supports public interest fellows from NYU School of Law, Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School and Yale Law School for a total of $1.75 million in funding per year. The application deadline for 2Ls was September 30. The application deadline for 1Ls will be November 27 at 5:00 p.m. There will be an information session about the program on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, 11:00 AM to 11:50 AM in Furman Hall, Room 216.
