Although African communities are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, the continent has not seen as much activity in the climate change-human rights litigation field as other regions of the world. That is beginning to change, and CLX is supporting African litigators and human rights practitioners as they begin to challenge the human rights violations that African communities experience (and will continue to experience) as a result of climate change.
As part of this area of work, CLX has supported African NGOs as they challenge an East Africa pipeline and other fossil fuel infrastructure by hosting a series of strategic planning workshops. CLX has also provided expert scientific analysis for a petition lodged in the East African Court of Justice challenging the EACOP project. In addition to case-specific work, CLX is supporting efforts spearheaded by African litigators and practitioners to establish a regional community of practice for rights-based climate litigation.
