Past NYU Teams

2016 NYU Team, 28th Edition (Évian-les-Bains, France on March 19 to March 26, 2016):

Sarika Arya, a JD Candidate (Class of 2017) is a graduate of Yale University and holds a Master of Science in Human Rights from the London School of Economics. She has also worked as a researcher for the UN Special Rapporteur on Conterterrorism and Human Rights and as a 2015 ILHR Fellow, she interned with JUSTICE  in London.

Erika Asgeirsson, a JD Candidate (Class of 2016) is a graduate of George Washington University, after which she served in the US Peace Corps in Burkino Faso. At NYU she is a Robert McKay Scholar and the Senior Articles Editor of the N.Y.U. Review of Law & Social Change. As a 2014 ILHR Fellow, she interned with Defense for Children International in Sierra Leone.

Samantha Wynne, LL.M Candidate (2016), a native of Canada, holds degrees from Richard Ivey School of Business and Queen’s University Faculty of Law. She was a member of a team that reached the Canadian finals in the Jessup International Law Moot. In addition to working with a private law firm, she has also clerked with the Supreme Court of Israel.

2015 NYU Team, 27th Edition (Charlottesville, Virginia, March 28 to April 4, 2015):

Patricia Shnell, a JD Candidate (Class of 2016) and graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. She is a Staff Editor of the Journal of International Law and Politics and a 2014-15 International Law and Human Rights Fellow with an internship with UNHCR Lebanon.  In 2014, she interned at the Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Center in Ramallah.

Peter Speelman, a JD Candidate (Class of 2016) and graduate of Calvin College. He is a Staff Editor of the Journal of International Law and Politics and a 2014-15 International Law and Human Rights Fellow with an internship with UNHCR Senegal. In 2014, he had an internship with in Tunis with Tunisian Institutional Reform.

John Washington, a JD Candidate (Class of 2016) and honors graduate of the University of Florida. He is a 2013-14 International Law and Human Rights Fellow with an internship with UNHCR Senegal. Prior to NYU School of Law, he was in the Peace Corps in Botswana and Mali.

2014 NYU Team, 26th Edition (Sintra, Portugal, March 1-8, 2014):

Dennis Ardis, a JD Candidate (Class of 2014) and honors graduate of the University of Oklahoma. He was a 2011-12 and 2012-13 International Law and Human Rights Fellow and a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship in Middle East Studies which sent him to Jordan, with proficiently in French and Arabic.

Christopher Nairn, an LL.M Candidate from Scotland, is an honors graduate of the University of Edinburgh, which included international humanitarian law studies at the University of Copenhagen. He has also interned with Partners in Health in Rwanda and the Clinton Global Initiative.

Abby Zeith, an LL.M Candidate from Australia, is an honors graduate of Queensland University of Technology School of Law and a member of the Australian Army Reserve. She is a 2013-14 International Law and Human Rights Fellow.

2013 NYU Team, 25th Edition (Kanchanaburi, Thailand, March 2-9, 2013):

Kathleen Davis, an LL.M candidate from Canada, is an honors graduate of Queens University Faculty of Law and the University of Western Ontario, and has also completed the Public International Law Program at The Hague Academy of International Law and the International Humanitarian Law Program at Harvard University. She is a 2012-13 International Law and Human Rights Fellow.

Ann Vodhanel Preis is in her third year (Class of 2013) and an honors graduate of Princeton University. She is a member of the Inactive Ready Reserve of the US Navy Judge Advocate General Corps. Before entering NYU School of Law, she worked in Thailand and Indonesia through the Princeton in Asia program, focusing primarily on peace-building efforts in conflict-affected areas.

Raquel J. Saavedra Pickens, a member of theClass of 2013, is an honors graduate of Fordham University. Before entering NYU School of Law, her work included projects in Guatemala to promote community development in poor areas. At NYU, she has been active in the Journal of International Law and Politics, Law Women, Latin America Law Students Association and Law Students for Human Rights.

2012 NYU Team, 24th Edition (Winterton/Drakensberg, South Africa, April 14-21, 2012):

Farrell Brody, a member of the Class of 2012, is a 2003 honors graduate of Case Western Reserve University and worked in several capacities – legal assistant with a large law firm and a grassroots and political organizer and a teacher in Guatemala – before entering NYU School of Law. His law school activities have included an internship in Sierra Leone as an ILHR Fellow and extended work in Haiti through the Global Justice Clinic.

Jaclyn Saffir , is a member of the Class of 2013 and a 2010 honors graduate of Brandeis University where an emphasis was on international criminal law. She is a two-time ILHR Fellow and has focused on immigrant and refugee rights, including work with the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), as well as terrorism prosecutions, during her time at NYU.

Carson Thomas, a member of the Class of 2013, is a 2006 honors graduate of Carleton College and also earned an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth College before starting law school. He traveled widely in Turkey, Spain, Mexico and Nepal, working as a teacher, and also worked in the US on land management issues and as a ski patroller. At NYU, he is an IILJ Scholar and an ILHR Fellow whose internship was at the UN International Law Commission.

2011 NYU Team, 23rd Edition (Najac, France, March 26 to April 2, 2011):

Greger Calhan, a member of the Class of 2012, was an honors graduate of Grinnell College and was first in his class at William Mitchell College of Law before transferring to NYU School of Law. He was a member of the US Peace Corps in Mauritania and Chad from 2004-2007 and then a teacher in Minneapolis Public Schools before starting law school. He is a staff editor of the NYU Law Review.

Charles Gussow, a member of the Class of 2011 and a graduate of Dartmouth College where he was president of the Senior Class. He was a member of the US Peace Corps in Turkmenistan in 2002-2004 and then worked for the International Research and Exchanges Board and then the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation before starting NYU School of Law. He is a Flora & Richard Secular Scholar at NYU and was Case Manager for Suspension Representation Project, which received the NY State Bar Association’s 2010 President’s Pro Bono Service Award.

Kaveri Vaid, a member of the Class of 2012, is an honors graduate of Williams College and holds a Masters Degree (Political Science, International Affairs) from Columbia University. After college, she was with Teach for America in New Orleans and with the Carnegie Corporation as a program assistant and then a consultant. At NYU, she has worked with the Center for Law and Security and is a staff editor of the Journal of International Law and Politics. In summer 2010, she had an internship with the ICC Prosecutor’s Office in The Hague.

2010 NYU Team, 22nd Edition (Orford, Quebec, Canada, March 20-27, 2010):

Colin Gillespie, a member of the Class of 2011, was an honors graduate of Northwestern University. Before law school, he worked at vocational universities in Turkey, implementing curriculum for accelerated English learning. At NYU, he is a research assistant to Professor Philip Alston and a Staff Editor of the Annual Survey of American Law.

Graham Dumas, a member of the Class of 2011, was an honors graduate of Amherst College. Before law school, he participated in programs or organizations focusing on Russia, including a program at St. Petersburg State University, the National Endowment for Democracy and the Institute for Information Freedom Development, as well as a program of the National Lawyers Guild focusing on questions of international humanitarian law. At NYU, he is the Executive Editor of the Journal of International Law and Politics.

J. Benton Heath, also a member of the Class of 2011, is an honors graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. A journalist before coming to NYU, he was a 2008-09 International Law and Human Rights Student Fellow who had an internship at the International Law Commission. At NYU, he is active in the Journal of International Law and the International Journal of Constitutional Law as well as continuing to provide research assistance to ILC Commissioner Eduardo Valenica-Ospina.

2009 NYU Team, 21st Edition (Evian-les-Bain, France, March 28 – April 4, 2009):

Christen Broecker is a 2005 honors graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her JD degree from NYU in 2008 and is a candidate for an LL.M. in International Studies from NYU in 2009. She is an IILJ Scholar and also the recipient of an International Law and Human Rights Student Fellowship, through which she interned at the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Benjamin Brod is a third year law student at NYU and a 2004 graduate of Duke University. Before coming to NYU, he worked in France teaching English and at law firms in New York and Paris.

Sanja Popovic a native of the former Yugoslavia and a Canadian citizen, received her undergraduate degree and a bachelor of laws degree from the University of Windsor (Canada) in 2006 and 2007 respectively. She is a candidate for an LL.M. in International Legal Students at NYU in 2009. Prior to coming to NYU, she interned at the ICTY where she worked on the trial of Slobodan Milosevic.

2008 NYU Team, 20th Edition (Geneva, Switzerland, April 2008):

Amélie Baudot a French and American dual-national, is a third-year JD student with a strong interest in International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, and United Nations Law. She has an undergraduate degree in International Relations and Economics from Connecticut College and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the Institut universitaire de hautes études internationals (HEI) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Rebecca Jenkin is an Australian LL.M. candidate, undertaking studies in international law, criminal law and legal theory. She obtained her LLB (1st class honors) and her BA from the Australian National University. Rebecca has previously worked as a clerk to Justice Weinberg on the Federal Court of Australia, and as a clerk to Judges Keith and Skotnikov at the International Court of Justice.

Zoe Salzman a native of Canada, received her JD degree from NYU in 2007 and is a candidate for an LL.M. in International Legal Studies. She received her undergraduate degree (with great distinction) from Concordia University in Montreal. Her research interests focus on international humanitarian and human rights law, particularly on the use of force by non-state actors, peace agreements, and private military companies.

2007 NYU Team, 19th Edition (El Escorial, Spain, April 2007):

Naomi Burke is a candidate for an LL.M at NYU School of Law in International Legal Studies. She holds an undergraduate degree in Law and French from Trinity College Dublin and a master’s degree in Political Science from IEP Paris. She is also a member of the New York Bar and has interned at the ICJ and the European Commission.

Tiasha Palikovic is a third year law student at NYU School of Law. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics.

Junko Tadaki is a candidate for an LL.M. in International Legal Studies. Originally from Japan, she holds a law degree from Monash University. She practiced law in Australia and interned at the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Tokyo before coming to NYU.
