Joyce is a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Ghent University (BE) and a Scholar in Residence at CHRGJ. She is currently working on developing a model of relational human rights responsibility, to effectively apportion human rights responsibility stemming from hybrid forms of cooperation involving state actors and non-state actors such as international organizations and private entities. Specifically, she focuses on apportioning human rights responsibility following border management measures involving States, the EU and artificially intelligent systems developed by private entities.

Joyce holds a Master of Laws from Ghent University an LLM in International and European Law from the Institute for European Studies – Free University of Brussels and obtained her doctoral degree at Ghent University in 2021 titled “Catch-22 in the Law of Responsibility of International Organizations – Systemic Deficiencies in the EU Responsibility Paradigm for Unlawful Human Rights Conduct in Integrated Border Management.” Joyce was subsequently selected as an Emile Noël Fellow at the Jean Monnet Center of New York University (2021–2022).

Prior thereto, Joyce was an academic assistant at the Department of European, Public and International Law (UGent), where she coached and continues to coach the Jessup Moot Court team, the ELMC Moot Court team, as well as the Price Media Law Moot Court. In addition, she was a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam (2020-2021), at Leiden University (2021-2022) and has provided ad hoc lectures at various institutions, including the College of Europe (Belgium).
