Sharma Aurelien was born in Port-de-Paix, in the Northwest of Haiti. Her parents later moved to Jean Rabel, another city in the Northwest of her country, where she grew up. Sharma has developed a loving relationship with this city where her parents still live. 

A feminist activist, Sharma began her studies in sociology at the State University of Haiti where she obtained her bachelor’s degree. Sharma went on to obtain a master’s degree at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales-EHESS (School of High Studies in Social Sciences) in Paris in 2018.  

Sharma has been a member of a feminist organization in Haiti, Solidarite Fanm Ayisyèn-SOFA (Haitian Women Solidarity, in English), since 2015. She worked as a Program Officer for SOFA until June 2020, when she was promoted to Executive Director. Sharma served as Executive Director until August 2022.  

As a Program Officer, Sharma worked for the advancement of different portfolios for SOFA such as “Fighting against Violence against Women and Girls,” “Women’s Political Participation,” ”Women’s Health,” and “Fighting against Feminization of Poverty.” Sharma therefore has strong experience in promoting women’s rights in Haiti.

Sharma began her collaboration with the Global Justice Clinic (GJC) through a joint submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women regarding a case of land grabbing against SOFA in Haiti. She is currently working as a consultant for GJC. She provides research and strategy advice to GJC and supports outreach and collaboration with a range of Haitian organizations. In the 2022-2023 academic year, Sharma is also a fellow of the Human Rights Advocates Program at Columbia University.

Sharma enjoys reading, especially novels, and dancing. She is learning to make time for board games in her spare time.
